Practical overview
When it fits
Use Gochain when you need a GoChain protocol node, a local client for mainnet or testnet interaction, or node interfaces for an application. Developers can use its testnet option to experiment with contracts before working on mainnet.
Who it is for
- Operators running a GoChain node or private network.
- Developers connecting applications to GoChain through JSON-RPC.
- Go developers building GoChain contract bindings or debugging EVM bytecode.
Documented uses
- Run a full, archive or light node on a GoChain network.
- Interact with the network through a built-in JavaScript console or JSON-RPC interfaces.
- Generate typed Go bindings from contract ABIs or Solidity source files.
- Debug EVM bytecode in an isolated environment.
- Build the client or full suite of utilities from source.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and provides an LGPL-3.0 license. Source builds require Go 1.12 or later and a C compiler.
- Fast sync is the documented default for console examples and avoids processing the network's full history, which the README describes as CPU-intensive.
- IPC is enabled by default; HTTP and WebSocket require configuration and expose only a subset of APIs.
- The documented testnet uses separate network settings and a separate data directory; macOS and Linux users need a custom IPC endpoint when attaching to a running testnet node.
- The README directs dApp, smart-contract, private-network and node setup workflows to the separate GoChain documentation repository.
- The client is written in Go; building the source also requires a C compiler.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build the Gochain client from source
Compile the main Gochain command-line client from its source repository.
Before you start
- Go version 1.12 or later
- A C compiler
Steps
Install Go and a C compiler.
Run the command below in the repository to build the client.
make gochainRun the command below instead if you want to build the full suite of utilities.
make all
Expected outcome
A built Gochain client, or the complete utility suite when using `make all`.
Guide limitations
- The README documents build commands but does not provide a source-build execution walkthrough.
Start a Gochain node with Docker
Start a fast-sync Gochain node using the documented Docker example.
Before you start
- Docker
- A local directory to mount for persistent blockchain data
Steps
Run the README's Docker command with a mounted data directory and the documented port mappings.
For RPC access from other containers or hosts, configure the node with
--rpcaddr 0.0.0.0; the default RPC binding is local-only.
Expected outcome
A Docker-started node in fast-sync mode, with blockchain data stored in the mounted volume.
Guide limitations
- The example uses specific port mappings and a 1 GB database memory allowance.
- Changing the RPC bind address makes the endpoint accessible beyond the local interface; configure exposure deliberately.
