Repository Harness

Repository Harness is a Rust command-line developer tool that installs a lightweight protocol, repository map and maintenance updater in a software repository. It helps coding agents find authoritative project documents and use code, tests, CI and runtime evidence as context, while keeping the repository as the system of record.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Repository Harness when coding agents need clearer repository context and you want a maintained, repository-native protocol rather than task tracking or agent orchestration. It is also relevant when updating that protocol must account for local changes.

Who it is for

  • Software teams using Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or other coding agents in existing repositories.
  • Repository maintainers who want durable project context and a safer way to update shared agent guidance.

Documented uses

  • Direct a coding agent to authoritative project documents and repository navigation.
  • Keep product intent, decisions and implementation evidence grounded in the repository.
  • Preview and maintain the installed protocol while preserving local edits.
  • Explicitly invoke optional workflows for repository onboarding, invariant encoding or evidence-backed Harness improvements.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The project is identified as open source under the MIT license. The documented interface is a CLI.

  • The repository remains the system of record; consumer repositories own their task workflow and planning.
  • Harness skills are explicit-only and do not activate just because the tool is installed.
  • The default core does not provide application runtimes, credentials, fixtures, logs or interface automation.
  • The updater stages overlapping local and upstream edits for human resolution rather than silently choosing a semantic result.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install Repository Harness in a project

Add the default repository protocol and agent context to a target repository using the documented Unix-like bootstrap.

Before you start

  • A target software repository.
  • A shell environment with the documented curl and bash commands.

Steps

  1. From the target repository, run the documented install command with the --yes option.

  2. Use --merge to preserve existing files and add only missing Harness paths, or use --dry-run to preview.

  3. Review the installed AGENTS.md entrypoint and docs/README.md repository map.

Expected outcome

The declared Harness core is installed in the repository, including its compact agent entrypoint and navigation context.

Guide limitations

  • Use --override only when replacing existing files is intentional.
  • Installation does not provide application architecture, product policy, validation commands, credentials, a database, schemas, orchestration or background processes.
  • Harness skills require explicit user invocation and do not run during installation.

Preview and apply a Harness update

Use the installed maintenance binary to inspect an update and apply it when ready.

Before you start

  • A repository with Harness installed and the documented scripts/bin/harness binary.

Steps

  1. Run scripts/bin/harness status and scripts/bin/harness doctor.

  2. Preview the update with scripts/bin/harness update --dry-run.

  3. Apply it with scripts/bin/harness update.

Expected outcome

The updater uses a three-way merge, backs up changed files and activates the result transactionally.

Guide limitations

  • Overlapping local and upstream edits are staged without changing managed files or the executable; a human must resolve the semantic choice.
  • The documented continuation process includes a further dry run before continuing after conflict resolution.
