Source-based practical guide

Create a text interaction with the Gemini API

Send a text prompt to a Gemini model and print its text response using the Python SDK.

Before you start

  • A Gemini API key available as GEMINI_API_KEY.
  • The Python Google Gen AI SDK, imported as from google import genai.

Steps

  1. Create a client with client = genai.Client().

  2. Create an interaction with client.interactions.create(model="gemini-3.8-flash", input="Explain how AI works in a few words").

  3. Print the response with print(interaction.output_text).

Expected outcome

The example prints the model's text response to the prompt.

Guide limitations

  • This recipe follows the documented Python example; no SDK installation procedure is provided here.
  • The repository README says the repository is deprecated and no longer maintained; it points to the active Gemini documentation.
