Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when an AI application needs to execute generated code in a cloud sandbox, or when you need to create a customized sandbox template. Consult the E2B monorepo for the moved SDK sources and issues.
Who it is for
- Developers adding generated-code execution to an AI application.
- Teams that need Python or JavaScript/TypeScript code to run in cloud sandboxes.
- Developers customizing sandbox templates with additional packages or runtimes.
Documented uses
- Create and control a cloud sandbox from an application using the Python or JavaScript/TypeScript SDK.
- Run generated code and retrieve its text output.
- Build a custom sandbox template for additional packages or a different runtime.
- Use the retained chart data extractor in chart-data extraction workflows.
Requirements & limits
The README’s first-sandbox setup requires signing up for E2B and obtaining an API key. The repository describes the infrastructure as open source and lists an Apache-2.0 license.
- Choose the Python or JavaScript/TypeScript SDK according to the application stack.
- The API-key-based setup requires an E2B account.
- SDK source code has moved to the E2B monorepo; the current repository retains the sandbox template and chart data extractor.
- Custom packages or runtimes are handled through a custom sandbox template guide.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up and run a first sandbox
Install an E2B SDK, configure an API key, and run a short code expression in a sandbox.
Before you start
- A Python or JavaScript/TypeScript development environment
- An E2B account and API key
Steps
Install the SDK with the command below for Python or the command below for JavaScript/TypeScript.
pip install e2b-code-interpreternpm i @e2b/code-interpreterSign up to E2B, retrieve an API key from the dashboard, and set it as the
E2B_API_KEYenvironment variable.Use the SDK to create a sandbox, run code such as
x = 1followed byx+=1; x, and read the execution text output.
Expected outcome
A sandbox executes the sample expression and returns its text output; the README’s example shows `2`.
Guide limitations
- The SDK sources now live in the E2B monorepo; this repository retains the sandbox template and chart data extractor.
- This setup example covers a simple code execution flow, not custom template creation.
