Practical overview
When it fits
Use Opensrc when understanding a dependency requires reading implementation code rather than relying only on its name or exposed types.
Who it is for
- Developers investigating how a dependency is implemented.
- Coding-agent workflows that need package source as additional context.
Documented uses
- Fetch package source from supported registries or GitHub.
- Search dependency code with local command-line tools.
- Open specific source files for implementation-level inspection.
Requirements & limits
The getting-started instructions require Node.js 18 or later and Git for cloning repositories.
- The CLI documentation names npm, PyPI, crates.io, and GitHub as supported source registries.
- The first path lookup fetches source; subsequent lookups use the cached path.
- Opensrc retrieves source and exposes a path; searching and reading are done with other command-line tools.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Opensrc and inspect package source
Set up the CLI and use its returned source path with shell tools to search or read a package implementation.
Before you start
- Node.js 18 or later
- Git for cloning repositories
- A shell and search or file-reading tools such as rg, grep, find, or cat
Steps
Install the CLI with the command below.
npm install -g opensrcPass a package reference to
opensrc path; the first use fetches the source and returns its cached path on later calls.Use the returned path with a shell tool, such as
rg "parse" $(opensrc path zod)to search orcat $(opensrc path zod)/src/types.tsto read a file. For other documented sources, use references such as
pypi:requests,crates:serde, orvercel/next.js.
Expected outcome
A local cached source path that can be searched or used to open package files.
Guide limitations
- The documented examples cover source retrieval and local inspection; they do not describe automated analysis of the retrieved code.
Compare options for AI coding assistance
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opensrc | Fetch package source from supported registries or GitHub. | CLI | The getting-started instructions require Node.js 18 or later and Git for cloning repositories. |
| Spectra | Clarify requirements and compare approaches before proposing a change. | CLI, Desktop | The README lists a macOS and Windows desktop app, and a Homebrew installation for macOS. The CLI is published through npm and requires Node.js 22.14 or newer. |
| Skills — michaelshimeles | Install reusable task-specific skills into a coding-agent setup. | CLI | The repository README provides an npx installation command for most coding agents and describes automatic or explicit skill invocation in Claude Code. |
