Agent Evaluation & Observability

Abtop

Abtop is a Rust command-line monitor that discovers local Claude Code, Codex CLI and OpenCode sessions and displays session usage and runtime information in a terminal interface. It tracks tokens, context-window use, rate limits, child processes and open ports, with the specific details varying by agent.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Abtop while running supported coding agents locally when a consolidated view of sessions, usage signals and associated processes is useful.

Who it is for

  • Developers running multiple supported coding-agent sessions across projects.
  • People who want to inspect agent token use, context or rate limits while working.
  • Developers looking for agent-related child processes and open ports.

Documented uses

  • See supported active coding-agent sessions together in a terminal.
  • Check session token use and, for supported agents, context-window and rate-limit information.
  • Inspect child processes and open ports associated with agent sessions.
  • Print a one-shot JSON snapshot for scripts or local tools.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The README describes the monitor as read-only and says it requires no API keys or authentication. It documents macOS, Linux and Windows support. OpenCode discovery requires sqlite3 in PATH.

  • Feature coverage differs by agent: OpenCode does not list context-window percentage, current task or rate limits; subagent and memory status are listed only for Claude Code.
  • OpenCode monitoring has an additional sqlite3 command-line dependency.
  • The interactive interface is designed for terminal use; the README recommends 120×40 or larger, with panels adapting at the stated 80×24 minimum.
  • The CLI includes --once and --json for single snapshots, as well as a library crate for Rust applications.
  • The repository identifies the project as MIT-licensed and Rust-based.

Source-based practical guide

Install and launch Abtop

Install the CLI and open its interactive terminal monitor.

Before you start

  • A macOS, Linux or Windows system, or a terminal with Cargo available.
  • For OpenCode session discovery on Linux or Windows, install the sqlite3 command-line tool.

Steps

  1. On macOS or Linux, run the documented installer command, or install with the command below.

    Documented command
    cargo install abtop
  2. On Windows, run the documented PowerShell installer, or use Cargo from a terminal with Git in PATH.

  3. If monitoring OpenCode sessions, ensure sqlite3 is available in PATH; on Windows, the README gives winget install SQLite.SQLite.

  4. Run abtop to launch the terminal interface.

Expected outcome

The terminal interface displays discovered sessions for supported coding agents and their available monitoring details.

Guide limitations

  • The README recommends a terminal size of 120×40 or larger and gives 80×24 as a minimum, with panels hiding when space is limited.
  • OpenCode discovery requires sqlite3; supported details differ by agent.
