Practical overview
When it fits
Use the workbench when developing or learning with Apple Foundation Models on iOS or macOS, particularly when prompt experiments, tool behavior, run records, or adapter comparisons need a dedicated interface.
Who it is for
- iOS and macOS developers working with Apple Foundation Models
- Developers who want to edit prompts and tools, then inspect model runs
- Mac developers comparing a base model with an adapter
Documented uses
- Start from an editable recipe and run a modified experiment.
- Compose prompts, instructions, and tools and save the configuration.
- Review run status, transcripts, tool calls, timing, and token usage.
- Export a Playground configuration as Swift.
- Compare fresh base-model and adapter sessions using the same prompt.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and licensed under MIT. Development requires Xcode 26.6 or Xcode 27; the project lists iOS 26 or macOS 26 as platform requirements. Live model runs require Apple Intelligence enabled and a compatible physical device, with Apple Silicon specified for on-device execution.
- Live execution and simulator use have different roles: a compatible physical device is required for live model runs.
- The newest listed labs require Xcode 27; APIs introduced with the OS 27 SDK are gated, while the project describes the core app as usable with Xcode 26.
- Adapter Comparison is a macOS workspace; training and export are assigned to the separate fmas CLI.
- Tools that can change user data require confirmation through the app-owned workflow.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Open the project in Xcode
Prepare the Foundation Lab project for development in Xcode.
Before you start
- A Mac with Xcode 26.6 or Xcode 27
- The repository’s stated platform requirements are iOS 26 or macOS 26
Steps
Clone the repository with Git.
Change into the repository directory.
Open FoundationLab.xcodeproj.
Expected outcome
The Foundation Lab Xcode project opens for development.
Guide limitations
- Opening the project does not establish that a live model run will work.
- Live model execution requires a compatible physical device; simulator builds are for compilation and interface validation.
