Practical overview
When it fits
Use EmbedAnything when an application needs an embeddable ingestion and inference layer to prepare content or queries for retrieval. Choose it when model and input flexibility, Python access, or vector-database adapters matter to the implementation.
Who it is for
- Developers building retrieval-augmented generation or knowledge-retrieval applications.
- Teams that need a configurable embedding pipeline for documents, images, audio, video or webpages.
- Rust or Python developers integrating embedding output with vector database adapters.
Documented uses
- Turn supported files or media into embedding vectors and associated text or metadata.
- Embed text queries for similarity-based retrieval workflows.
- Configure chunking, batching and model backends for an ingestion pipeline.
- Stream embeddings to a supported vector database adapter.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and licensed under Apache-2.0. The README documents Python installation with `pip install embed-anything` and a separate `embed-anything-gpu` package for GPU use and special models.
- It is a library rather than a complete retrieval application; the integrating system must supply search and user-facing behavior.
- The project documents both Rust and Python usage, including Python references and Rust API documentation.
- Backend and model support differ by modality; the documentation lists Candle, ONNX and cloud options.
- The Pinecone example requires an API key and an index configured for the embedding dimension and similarity metric.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Embed a document and inspect its vectors
Generate text embeddings from a PDF or other supported text file and access its text and metadata.
Before you start
- Install the embed-anything Python package.
- Choose a supported model and provide a local file such as a PDF, TXT or Markdown document.
Steps
Install the package with the command below.
pip install embed-anythingLoad an embedding model using the documented
EmbeddingModelinterface and a model ID.Set text options such as chunk size, batch size and splitting strategy with
TextEmbedConfig.Pass the file, model and configuration to
embed_anything.embed_file.Read the returned items' text, embedding and metadata.
Expected outcome
A list of embedded content items with text, vectors and metadata.
Guide limitations
- The guide covers embedding and inspecting output, not building a search interface or completing a RAG application.
- Available models and backends vary; the documentation identifies different support for Candle and ONNX.
Stream image embeddings to Pinecone
Embed images from a directory and send the resulting vectors to a Pinecone index.
Before you start
- Install EmbedAnything and configure a Pinecone API key.
- Have an image directory and a supported image embedding model.
Steps
Create a
PineconeAdapterusing the API key.Create a Pinecone index with a dimension, similarity metric and index name matching the embedding setup.
Load a documented image model such as CLIP.
Call
embed_image_directorywith the directory, model and adapter.
Expected outcome
The example streams image embeddings to the Pinecone index rather than keeping them in memory.
Guide limitations
- This is a Pinecone-specific example; it requires a Pinecone account credential and an index configured for the selected vector dimensions.
- The guide covers indexing, not querying the index or delivering a search application.
Compare options for Retrieval-augmented applications
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
