Practical overview
When it fits
Use Emdash when you want to delegate parallel coding tasks while keeping each task isolated for comparison and review.
Who it is for
- Developers who want to explore multiple fixes or features concurrently.
- Teams that route issues or tickets to coding agents and review the resulting changes.
- Developers working with local repositories or codebases on remote machines over SSH/SFTP.
Documented uses
- Run several coding agents without juggling separate terminals.
- Keep concurrent agent tasks separated in Git worktrees and branches.
- Send supported issue-tracker or project-management tickets to an agent.
- Review diffs, create pull requests, inspect CI checks and merge changes in one place.
Requirements & limits
The project lists desktop builds for macOS, Windows and Linux. It is licensed under Apache-2.0.
- Emdash detects installed provider CLIs; the provider tools and their own data-handling practices remain relevant.
- Each agent task runs in its own Git worktree and branch, supporting review before selected work is merged.
- Remote workflows use SSH/SFTP and support SSH agent, key and password authentication; credentials are stored in the operating system keychain.
- The app stores its state in a local SQLite database and says it does not send code or chats to Emdash servers; agent providers may receive code, prompts and context.
- Telemetry is optional and can be disabled in Settings or with the documented TELEMETRY_ENABLED=false launch setting.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Create an Emdash task from a connected issue
Create a task linked to an issue from a connected tracker.
Before you start
- Emdash is installed.
- The issue tracker is connected in Settings → Integrations.
- For GitHub Issues, a GitHub account is added and selected in the project settings.
Steps
Click Add Task or press ⌘N, then select From Issue.
Search for an issue and select it.
Choose the branch to start from, then enter a task name or use the generated name.
Select a provider and click Create.
Expected outcome
Emdash creates a task linked to the selected issue; the issue can be inserted into the task conversation as context.
Guide limitations
- Issue trackers require connection first; GitHub Issues additionally requires a GitHub account selected for the project.
- Issue context fields depend on what the tracker makes available.
Compare options for AI coding assistance
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emdash | Run several coding agents without juggling separate terminals. | Desktop, Linux, macOS, Windows | The project lists desktop builds for macOS, Windows and Linux. It is licensed under Apache-2.0. |
| Llmcode | Inspect a project's directory structure with `/tree`. | CLI | The documented setup requires an API key and supports an API base URL and model setting. The project is open source under Apache-2.0. |
| Klaat Code | Open a project directory for terminal-based coding assistance. | CLI, Server | The README provides a global npm installation command and documents browser sign-in with a KlaatAI account. It also identifies the repository as open source under Apache 2.0. |
