Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Anus when you want terminal-based coding assistance and can configure at least one supported model-provider key.

Who it is for

  • Developers who want an AI coding agent in a project folder from the terminal.
  • Users who can provide an API key from a supported model provider.

Documented uses

  • Ask for a coding task, such as fixing a failing test.
  • Work with code through an interactive terminal session or a single prompt.
  • Continue a prior session, choose a model manually or inspect free-model availability.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

Requires Node.js 22.19 or newer and at least one provider key. Listed provider plans have differing limits and terms; the README notes that some free tiers may change and that Gemini is unavailable in some countries.

  • Model access depends on keys configured with anus setup; paid keys in shell environment variables are ignored by default.
  • Model fallback can help when a selected provider model is rate-limited, capped or stops mid-response.
  • Free-tier data practices vary by provider; the README advises keeping secrets out of the folder where Anus runs.
  • The underlying pi engine provides the terminal interface, tools, sessions and providers; Anus adds model routing and key setup.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install Anus and configure a model key

Install the command-line agent and complete its documented first-run key setup.

Before you start

  • Node.js 22.19 or newer
  • At least one provider key supported by Anus

Steps

  1. Install globally with the command below, or use the documented shell installer: the command below.

    Documented command
    npm install -g @anus-dev/anus
    Documented command
    curl -fsSL https://anus.dev/install | sh
  2. Run anus to start in the current folder.

  3. When prompted, provide at least one free provider key. Use anus setup later to add or change keys.

Expected outcome

Anus is installed and configured with at least one provider key for model requests.

Guide limitations

  • Provider free tiers, rate limits and country availability vary and can change.
  • Some free-tier model providers may use submitted data to improve their models.
