Alta

Alta is a local, open-source multi-agent market-research platform operated by specialized LLM agents. It combines evidence-first investigation, independent review, strategy comparison, an auditable operator console, Shadow simulation and a separate boundary for explicitly authorized broker execution.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Alta when market research needs separated agent roles, recorded evidence and review before simulated or explicitly authorized execution. Begin with Shadow mode when evaluating a research workflow.

Who it is for

  • Market researchers needing inspectable agent-generated research trails
  • Developers exploring local, event-driven multi-agent trading software
  • Operators reviewing hypotheses, model assignments and trading permissions

Documented uses

  • Search for market changes, anomalies and unanswered questions
  • Attach supporting evidence to research theses
  • Have independent reviewers challenge agent conclusions
  • Compare instruments, costs and possible actions
  • Record hypothetical trading decisions in Shadow mode

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and licensed under Apache-2.0. Local setup is documented for macOS or Linux with Node.js 22 or later, Python 3.12, uv, Docker or OrbStack, and sufficient disk space.

  • The system is described as research-only experimental software rather than investment advice or a production order-management system.
  • Shadow simulation and Broker API execution are separate modes.
  • Broker orders require a verified, explicitly selected account and separate authorization.
  • The repository mentions six connectors but does not document a specific broker interface or establish live-account acceptance.
  • Opposing review roles are configured with different available models.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up Alta locally and begin in Shadow mode

Prepare the local console, assign agent models and start managed research services in Shadow mode.

Before you start

  • macOS or Linux
  • Node.js 22 or later with npm
  • Python 3.12
  • uv
  • Docker or OrbStack

Steps

  1. Clone the ALTA repository and enter its directory.

  2. Run npm run dashboard to install locked frontend dependencies when needed, build the console and open the authenticated loopback page.

  3. Enter research or data credentials in the console and choose available models under Agents → Agent models; opposing review roles must use different models.

  4. Prepare the locked backend environment, start managed research services and begin in Shadow mode.

  5. Open a Scout record to inspect the research trail.

Expected outcome

A local Alta console is prepared for agent-model assignment and research in Shadow mode, with Scout records available for inspection.

Guide limitations

  • This recipe documents setup and the beginning of Shadow research, not a successful broker execution.
  • Broker orders require a verified, explicitly selected account and separate authorization.
  • Live-account acceptance is not established.
