Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when agents need persistent local planning and coordination across complex or parallel coding work, especially where an offline SQLite-backed workflow is preferable to a cloud service.
Who it is for
- Developers building AI-assisted coding workflows
- Teams coordinating multiple agents across decomposed tasks
- Builders needing local dependency-aware planning state
Documented uses
- Decompose agent-generated work into nested tasks
- Connect tasks with dependencies and sequence independent work
- Coordinate task claiming across multiple agents
- Record decisions, blockers and discoveries for later agent sessions
- Inspect critical paths and bottlenecks in a changing plan
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and lists an Apache-2.0 license. The README describes a single-binary local setup with no cloud, accounts or configuration files.
- Local SQLite storage supports offline planning state.
- The compound graph connects dependencies across nested task groups.
- Atomic task claiming addresses duplicate work between agents.
- CLI, MCP and HTTP interfaces support different agent integration styles.
- Hosted deployment would require modification because the documented design is local-first and cloud-free.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Plandb and configure an agent workflow
Install the Plandb binary and generate or apply planning instructions for a supported agent framework.
Before you start
- A shell environment for the documented installer, or a Rust environment for installation from source.
- A supported workflow such as Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Gemini CLI, OpenCode, Windsurf or Aider.
Steps
Run the documented installer: curl -fsSL https://agentfield.ai/plandb/install | bash.
Use the installer’s documented options when needed, including --all for detected frameworks or --binary-only for the binary without framework configuration.
Alternatively, install from source with cargo install --path . or generate instructions with plandb prompt --for cli, --for mcp or --for http.
Open the configured AI agent and provide a task prompt that asks it to use Plandb for planning.
Expected outcome
The binary is installed and the selected agent workflow has Plandb planning instructions or generated prompts available.
Guide limitations
- The documentation describes configuration for named frameworks but does not establish compatibility with other tools.
- The installer and prompt configuration stages are documented; this guide does not verify a completed agent run.
Compare options for Agent orchestration
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plandb | Decompose agent-generated work into nested tasks | CLI, Self-hosted, Server | The repository is public and lists an Apache-2.0 license. The README describes a single-binary local setup with no cloud, accounts or configuration files. |
| klaw | Create agents with a namespace, model and skills. | CLI | The public GitHub repository describes klaw as source-available under the each::labs License. Its README says internal business use, personal projects and consulting are free, while multi-tenant SaaS or white-label distribution requires a license. The README documents Go 1.24+ and an install script. |
