Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you need a documented starting architecture for experimenting with supervised multi-agent software development, MCP integration or self-hosted agent controls.
Who it is for
- Experienced developers studying or adapting multi-agent coding workflows.
- Teams building self-hosted, human-supervised agent tooling.
- Developers integrating CLI-based agents with MCP servers and containerized operations.
Documented uses
- Delegate repository tasks among multiple AI agents through a GitHub Projects v2 work queue.
- Move agent-authored changes through pull requests, automated review and human merge.
- Apply wrapper guards, iteration limits, claim tracking and token controls around agent activity.
- Connect agents to specialized MCP servers for code, media and other tooling.
- Build or adapt containerized CI/CD and agent-integration components.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and open source under the Unlicense. The documented setup targets Linux with Docker and Docker Compose; an OpenRouter API key is required when using the relevant AI features.
- The architecture is self-hosted and container-first, with Docker specified for tools and CI/CD.
- The core implementation language is Rust, including board-management and GitHub-agent CLI tools.
- The demonstrated agent roster includes Claude Code, OpenCode and Crush, with OpenRouter and GitHub Copilot also described in the workflow.
- The repository covers both practical orchestration and separate research packages, including sleeper-agent analysis and autonomous economic-agent simulation.
- Known-trigger sleeper-agent backdoors are described as confirmed and localized; unknown-backdoor detection is not demonstrated.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the reference architecture
Prepare the documented self-hosted environment and build the optional Rust CLI tools.
Before you start
- Linux system
- Docker 20.10 or newer
- Docker Compose 2.0 or newer
- An OpenRouter API key if using the AI features
Steps
Clone the repository and enter its directory.
Build the Rust board-manager and GitHub-agents CLI tools if needed; pre-built binaries are also identified in releases.
Set OPENROUTER_API_KEY when using OpenCode, Crush or other OpenRouter-backed features.
Use the MCP configuration with Claude Code and consult the project quickstart and setup documentation for customization.
Expected outcome
A locally prepared template environment with its documented Rust tools and Claude Code MCP configuration available for further customization.
Guide limitations
- These steps document setup and configuration, not a verified execution run.
- The repository demonstrates a named agent roster; replacing it requires modification.
- The supplied material does not show the implementation steps for adding an individual MCP server.
Compare options for Agent orchestration
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Agent Orchestration & Security Template | Delegate repository tasks among multiple AI agents through a GitHub Projects v2 work queue. | CLI, Docker, Self-hosted, Server | The repository is public and open source under the Unlicense. The documented setup targets Linux with Docker and Docker Compose; an OpenRouter API key is required when using the relevant AI features. |
| Agenite | Define typed tools with JSON Schema validation and error handling. | CLI | |
| Veldra | Create an agent with a policy, tools, skills, knowledge base and reasoning method. | Self-hosted | The documented deployment is self-hosted and uses a sign-in gate after a first-run administrator account is created. |
