Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Magic Context when a coding-agent workflow needs project knowledge to persist beyond a single session and be surfaced during later work.

Who it is for

  • Developers using coding agents for projects that span multiple sessions.
  • Teams or individual builders creating agent applications with durable context.
  • Developers working with OpenCode, Pi or OMP harnesses.

Documented uses

  • Carry project decisions, constraints and conventions between coding-agent sessions.
  • Capture durable knowledge from ongoing agent history.
  • Review, deduplicate and update accumulated agent memories against the codebase.
  • Recall relevant memories, past conversations and Git history during later agent turns.
  • Provide a basis for inspecting agent memory through the repository’s documented dashboard functionality.

Requirements & limits

The project is available as a public GitHub repository under the MIT license. The repository documents installation through shell, PowerShell or npx setup paths, and provides an OpenCode plugin configuration example.

  • It is a TypeScript library rather than a standalone end-user coding agent.
  • The documented memory lifecycle has separate capture, consolidation and recall stages.
  • The repository describes support across OpenCode, Pi and OMP.
  • Host compaction must be disabled so it does not conflict with Magic Context’s context management.
  • The setup wizard is documented to detect harnesses, configure plugins and help select historian and dreamer models.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up Magic Context with a coding-agent harness

Configure Magic Context for an existing OpenCode, Pi or OMP installation.

Before you start

  • A supported OpenCode, Pi or OMP harness.
  • A macOS, Linux or Windows environment for the documented setup options.
  • Models selected for the historian and dreamer during setup.

Steps

  1. Run the documented interactive setup wizard using the platform-appropriate installer or the npx setup command.

  2. Allow the wizard to detect the available harnesses and add the corresponding plugin.

  3. Select models for the historian and dreamer when prompted.

  4. Disable the host harness’s built-in compaction so it does not interfere with Magic Context.

  5. If using OpenCode manually, add the documented plugin entry and set automatic compaction and pruning to false.

Expected outcome

Magic Context is configured as a plugin for the selected coding-agent harness, with host compaction disabled and model roles selected.

Guide limitations

  • The repository documents setup configuration but does not establish that a particular model, harness installation or project environment will work successfully.
  • The manual configuration example covers OpenCode; equivalent manual configuration for Pi or OMP is not specified here.
