Practical overview
When it fits
Use Opencodex when the client workflow is built around one of its named integrations but the model service needs to come from another supported provider or compatible endpoint. It is also relevant when provider selection and account management need to be handled from a local dashboard.
Who it is for
- Developers using Codex, Claude Code, Claude Desktop or Grok Build
- Teams or individuals who need to switch among supported LLM providers
- Developers connecting supported tools to Ollama or OpenAI-compatible endpoints
Documented uses
- Route coding-assistant requests through a selected LLM provider
- Change the model behind an existing Codex or Claude-oriented workflow
- Connect supported developer tools to local Ollama or other compatible endpoints
- Manage provider and model settings through a local dashboard
- Pool ChatGPT accounts for Codex authentication and route new sessions by reported usage
Requirements & limits
The repository documents a CLI installation requiring Node 18 or later, plus desktop beta packages for macOS, Windows and Linux. The project is MIT-licensed. The desktop release notes identify macOS 13+, Windows x64 and Linux x86_64 package formats.
- The primary interface is a local proxy and dashboard rather than a standalone model service.
- The useful integration depends on the client being one of the tools named by the repository.
- Provider coverage includes built-in options and OpenAI-compatible endpoints, but the appropriate configuration depends on the provider being connected.
- The desktop app is identified as beta, while the CLI installation is documented separately.
- The project is TypeScript-based and distributed under the MIT license.
