Practical overview
When it fits
Use Clarinet during Clarity contract development when you need project scaffolding, local checking, REPL interaction, testing or a local blockchain environment before working with deployed contracts.
Who it is for
- Stacks smart-contract developers
- Teams testing Clarity contracts locally
- Developers building tooling with the Clarinet SDK
- VSCode users who want Clarity linting, completion and debugging support
Documented uses
- Create Stacks smart-contract projects and contracts
- Manage contract dependencies with Clarinet requirements
- Check Clarity code and interact with it through a REPL
- Run local nodes, miners and APIs in a private development environment
- Write JavaScript-based unit tests with the Clarinet SDK
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and identifies the project as GPL-3.0 open source. It provides CLI tooling and editor support; no pricing or account requirement is established here.
- The tool targets Clarity contracts in the Stacks and Bitcoin ecosystem.
- Its local devnet includes nodes, miners and APIs for development and integration work.
- The SDK supports unit tests in a JavaScript environment.
- VSCode support includes linting, autocompletion, documentation and step-by-step debugging.
- The repository is primarily implemented in Rust, with a Rust WebAssembly component and TypeScript SDK wrapper.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Create and check a Clarity contract project
Create a Clarinet project, add a contract, check it and interact with it through the REPL.
Before you start
- Clarinet installed; the repository documents Homebrew installation.
- A terminal and a Clarity contract to place in the generated project.
Steps
Install Clarinet with the documented Homebrew command.
Create a project with
clarinet new hello-worldand enter its directory.Create a contract with
clarinet contract new counter.Add the documented counter contract, run
clarinet check, then launchclarinet consoleand call the contract functions shown in the README.
Expected outcome
A local Clarinet project with a checked Clarity contract and documented REPL calls for incrementing and reading a counter.
Guide limitations
- The README documents the local creation, checking and REPL stages; it does not establish a successful network deployment from this recipe.
