Practical overview
When it fits
Use Iotex Core when you need source-level access to IoTeX protocol software, a self-hosted server workflow or a development base for DePIN and EVM applications on IoTeX.
Who it is for
- Blockchain infrastructure operators
- Developers building DePIN applications on IoTeX
- Teams developing EVM-compatible decentralized applications
- Go developers working on blockchain protocol software
Documented uses
- Compile the IoTeX protocol implementation and command-line tools.
- Run or resume a standalone IoTeX blockchain server.
- Build applications that use IoTeX’s DePIN Layer-1 and EVM environment.
- Interact with the IoTeX blockchain through the ioctl CLI.
- Follow the repository’s delegate setup path when operating a delegate.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and specifies an Apache-2.0 license. The documented workflows target Go, server and self-hosted environments; no pricing or account requirement is specified in the available project material.
- The implementation language is Go, with Golang 1.22.12 or later listed as a minimum.
- The repository separates general and broader builds through make and make all.
- Protoc is needed only when protocol-buffer messages are rebuilt.
- The runtime workflow includes start, clean restart and a specific state-database recovery path.
- The project targets IoTeX’s modular DePIN Layer-1 and EVM blockchain environment.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build Iotex Core from source
Compile the documented Iotex Core server and CLI binaries from the public Go repository.
Before you start
- Golang 1.22.12 or later.
- Protoc 3.6.0 or later only when rebuilding protocol-buffer messages.
- A local copy of the iotex-core repository.
Steps
Download or clone the iotex-core code and change into its directory.
Set GO111MODULE=on when the project is placed under GOPATH/src, using the documented platform-specific form.
Run make for the general-purpose server and ioctl build, or make all for the broader build.
Use make test for unit tests or make docker to build the Docker image.
Expected outcome
A compiled Iotex Core build, with the repository’s documented test and Docker build targets available as separate options.
Guide limitations
- This recipe documents compilation and build targets; it does not establish that a node was successfully operated.
- The Protoc requirement applies only when rebuilding protobuf messages.
Start a standalone Iotex Core server
Use the repository’s documented Make targets to start, restart or recover a standalone blockchain server.
Before you start
- A built Iotex Core project.
- A server or self-hosted environment suitable for the repository’s runtime workflow.
Steps
Run make run to start or resume the standalone server.
Run make reboot when a restart from a clean state is required.
If make run reports the documented state-database failure while the block database is normal, run make recover.
Run make run again after the recovery step.
Expected outcome
The repository’s documented server start, clean-restart and state-database recovery workflow is prepared for use.
Guide limitations
- The recovery instruction applies to the specific state-database condition described by the repository.
- The source describes the commands but does not provide a compatibility guarantee for a particular host environment.
