Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when an AI agent needs focused workflows that connect natural-language or project-file inputs to CAD, manufacturing or robot-description artifacts.
Who it is for
- Mechanical engineers
- Robotics developers
- Fabrication and additive-manufacturing workflows
- Developers building AI agents with CAD capabilities
Documented uses
- Generate and edit CAD models from plain-language or image requests.
- Export CAD work to STEP, STL, 3MF and GLB formats.
- Find reusable STEP parts and produce dimensioned engineering drawings.
- Create DXF profiles, templates, gaskets and cut layouts.
- Write URDF, SRDF and SDF files for robot and simulation workflows.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public, MIT-licensed and identifies Python 3.11+ support.
- It is a skill library for agents, not documented as a standalone CAD editor.
- STEP is the main CAD output, with documented STL, 3MF and GLB export options.
- Robotics coverage includes URDF, SRDF/MoveIt2 and SDF skills.
- Manufacturing coverage spans DfAM, DFM, SendCutSend checks, G-code and Bambu Lab workflows.
- Each skill has a requirements file that pins its published cadgen release.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install the Text To Cad skill library
Set up the source tree and its documented skill dependencies.
Before you start
- Python 3.11 or newer.
- The Skills CLI.
- The text-to-cad repository or its main source tree.
Steps
Install or clone Text To Cad from the main source tree.
Install the library with the Skills CLI.
Use each skill's requirements file, which pins the cadgen release published with that skill.
Treat the models fixture corpus as unnecessary for using the skills; its contents arrive as small Git LFS pointers.
Expected outcome
The documented skill library and its pinned per-skill cadgen dependencies are set up for agent workflows.
Guide limitations
- Setup evidence does not verify a successful installation or execution.
