Practical overview
When it fits
Use Supervision when an application already has, or is selecting, a compatible vision model and needs reusable Python components around its outputs, datasets, or visualizations.
Who it is for
- Python developers building computer-vision applications
- Computer-vision engineers working with classification, detection, or segmentation models
- Teams that need reusable annotation, dataset, and post-processing components
Documented uses
- Connect supported vision models to common detection representations.
- Annotate images or frames with customizable visual components.
- Load, split, merge, and save detection datasets.
- Add image-processing and metrics utilities to a computer-vision application.
Requirements & limits
The repository identifies the project as public, open source, and MIT-licensed. The documented installation uses pip in a Python 3.10-or-newer environment. The library is listed for Linux, Windows, macOS, server, and self-hosted use.
- Python 3.10 or newer is required by the documented installation instructions.
- The library is model agnostic, with documented connectors for Ultralytics, Transformers, MMDetection, and Inference.
- Some examples need optional dependencies such as Pillow and rfdetr.
- The Inference connector requires a Roboflow API key.
- Dataset utilities cover documented formats including COCO, YOLO, and Pascal VOC.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Supervision in a Python environment
Set up the Supervision package for computer-vision development.
Before you start
- Python 3.10 or newer
- A Python environment with pip
Steps
Create or select a Python 3.10-or-newer environment.
Install the package with pip install supervision.
Consult the project documentation for conda, mamba, or source-install guidance if those methods are preferred.
Expected outcome
The Supervision package is installed and ready to be imported into a Python computer-vision project.
Guide limitations
- This setup procedure does not document model installation, model execution, or application deployment.
- Specific model integrations may require additional packages or credentials.
Load and prepare a detection dataset
Load a supported detection dataset and create train, test, and validation splits.
Before you start
- Supervision installed in a Python 3.10-or-newer environment
- A dataset in a supported format such as COCO, YOLO, or Pascal VOC
- The corresponding image and annotation paths; YOLO loading also uses a data YAML path
Steps
Load the dataset with the format-specific Supervision dataset utility.
Split the dataset with the documented split operation.
Split the resulting test data again to create a validation set, following the example workflow.
Iterate over dataset items or save the dataset in a supported output format.
Expected outcome
A detection dataset is loaded and divided into the documented development subsets.
Guide limitations
- The procedure depends on correctly formatted local images and annotations.
- The supplied instructions do not define a complete training workflow or validate a particular dataset.
