Practical overview
When it fits
Use Bluewallet for mobile Bitcoin and Lightning wallet tasks, or when evaluating a public React Native wallet codebase for development and adaptation.
Who it is for
- Bitcoin users managing wallets on a mobile device
- Lightning users seeking a mobile wallet application
- Developers examining or adapting a React Native Bitcoin wallet codebase
Documented uses
- Manage Bitcoin wallets on iOS or Android
- Use a Lightning-enabled wallet
- Build or inspect a React Native wallet interface backed by Electrum
- Develop a self-custody Bitcoin transaction application
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and lists an MIT license. The documentation provides links for iOS and Android applications and build instructions for Android, iOS and Mac Catalyst.
- It supports both Bitcoin and Lightning.
- The implementation uses React Native and Electrum.
- The repository documents SegWit-first transactions and Replace-By-Fee support.
- The project states that private keys never leave the device.
- The codebase is written primarily in TypeScript and is licensed under MIT.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the Bluewallet development project
Prepare the repository and launch a development build on Android or iOS.
Before you start
- A local Node.js and npm environment using versions specified in the repository's package.json engines field.
- For Android, Android Studio with an Android device or an AVD emulator.
- For iOS, an iOS development environment and a Rosetta-compatible iOS Simulator when debugging in the simulator.
Steps
Clone the repository, enter its directory and run npm install.
For Android, open the Android project through build.gradle, prepare a device or AVD emulator, and run npx react-native run-android.
For iOS, run npx pod-install and npm start, then run npx react-native run-ios in another terminal window.
For Mac Catalyst, run npx pod-install and npm start, open ios/BlueWallet.xcworkspace, select the BlueWallet scheme or target, and click Run.
Expected outcome
A development build can be launched on the selected Android, iOS or Mac Catalyst target.
Guide limitations
- The repository says to use the Node and npm versions specified in package.json; those versions are not reproduced here.
- Android setup requires either a connected device or an emulator configured through Android Studio.
- The iOS simulator requires a Rosetta-compatible simulator for the documented debugging workflow.
Compare options for Wallet connections
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
