Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when Solana data needs to enter an Apache Kafka pipeline from a self-hosted validator/plugin environment, with either broad event publishing or configured program and account filters.
Who it is for
- Solana validator and plugin operators
- Engineers building Kafka-based blockchain data pipelines
- Teams developing Solana monitoring, indexing or analytics systems
Documented uses
- Stream Solana account changes into Kafka.
- Publish complete transaction details, including instructions, fees and success or failure.
- Track slot progress, confirmation status and health-related slot events.
- Feed Solana data into monitoring, indexing, analytics or warehouse pipelines.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and lists an Apache-2.0 license. The project is described for Linux, server and self-hosted environments. No pricing or account requirement is documented.
- Kafka is required as the event destination through the configured bootstrap servers and topics.
- Account and transaction events use whitelist filtering unless all accounts are enabled; slot-status events are not affected by filters.
- The plugin must be built against the same Solana and Rust versions as the validator.
- Source builds require Rust 1.93.1 and Protobuf 3.15 or later.
- The configuration can control topics, ignored programs or accounts, failed and vote transactions, message wrapping, producer buffering and optional Prometheus metrics.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build the Kafka plugin from source
Produce the plugin library for use with a Solana validator and Kafka configuration.
Before you start
- Rust 1.93.1, as specified by the repository toolchain.
- Protobuf compiler version 3.15 or later.
- A build environment identical to the Solana validator environment, including Solana and Rust versions.
Steps
Install the documented Rust toolchain and a compatible Protobuf compiler.
Run the command below.
cargo build --releaseUse the generated Linux library at
./target/release/libsolana_accountsdb_plugin_kafka.soor the macOS library at./target/release/libsolana_accountsdb_plugin_kafka.dylib.Reference the library path in the plugin JSON configuration.
Expected outcome
A release-built plugin library is available to reference from the Solana plugin configuration.
Guide limitations
- The documented build requires matching validator and plugin build environments; mismatched Solana or Rust versions can cause memory corruption and crashes.
- The guide documents compilation and library paths, not validator deployment or a successful runtime test.
