Practical overview
When it fits
Use Solang when the contract language is Solidity but the intended deployment environment is Solana, Polkadot or Soroban rather than a single Ethereum-oriented target.
Who it is for
- Solidity developers targeting Solana, Polkadot or Stellar Soroban.
- Teams building workflows that compile Solidity for more than one supported blockchain ecosystem.
- Developers working with command-line blockchain tooling.
Documented uses
- Compile Solidity contracts for Solana-based deployments.
- Compile Solidity contracts for Polkadot or Substrate-based environments.
- Compile Solidity contracts for Stellar Soroban.
- Create a multi-chain Solidity development workflow across supported targets.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and licensed under Apache-2.0. Solang is available as a macOS Homebrew cask, while installation instructions for other operating systems are provided in the project documentation. It is included in the Solana Tools Suite from version 1.16.3 and higher.
- Target ecosystem: Solang provides separate targets for Solana, Polkadot and Soroban.
- Portability: the project describes Solidity 0.8 compatibility but warns of caveats caused by underlying blockchain differences.
- Output workflow: Polkadot compilation produces a
.contractartifact, while Soroban compilation produces a.wasmfile for Stellar CLI deployment. - Feature coverage: the project publishes a Soroban support matrix and identifies several target and language improvements as ongoing work.
- Tooling model: Solang is a command-line developer tool implemented in Rust and using LLVM.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Compile a Solidity contract for Polkadot
Produce a Polkadot contract artifact from the repository’s flipper example.
Before you start
- Solang installed or the documented Solang container available.
- The Solang repository and its Polkadot flipper example.
Steps
Select the Polkadot flipper example from the Solang repository.
Run
solang compile --target polkadot examples/polkadot/flipper.sol.Use the resulting
flipper.contractfile with Contracts UI, as described by the repository.
Expected outcome
A `flipper.contract` artifact is produced for use with Contracts UI.
Guide limitations
- The repository notes that Polkadot targets use the contracts pallet.
- The command documents compilation and artifact use, not the full Contracts UI deployment procedure.
