Practical overview
When it fits
Use Evolver when an agent project needs structured, reusable records of experience and changes instead of ad hoc prompt adjustments.
Who it is for
- Developers building AI agents
- Researchers testing structured agent evolution
- Teams that need auditable records of changes to agent behavior
- Users working with CLI or self-hosted agent infrastructure
Documented uses
- Build and evolve AI agents
- Record changes as Genes, Capsules, and Events
- Inspect or manage agent-evolution artifacts through a CLI
- Track changes to LLM-agent behavior with an audit trail
- Experiment with protocol-oriented agent evolution
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and listed as open source. The documented setup requires Node.js 18 or newer and Git; the primary CLI workflow runs inside a Git-initialized project directory.
- Git is required for the documented CLI workflow, including rollback-related operations.
- The framework models evolution with Genes, Capsules, and Events, which distinguishes it from workflows based only on prompt or skill-document changes.
- The repository lists GPL-3.0, while its README also describes a planned transition from fully open source to source-available for future releases.
- A contributor-oriented run-from-source path is documented separately from the recommended CLI quick start.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Evolver and prepare a project
Set up the Evolver CLI in a Git-based project.
Before you start
- Node.js 18 or newer
- Git
- A Git-initialized project directory
Steps
Install the CLI with npm: npm install -g @evomap/evolver.
Verify that the command is available with evolver --help.
Change to a Git-initialized project directory before running Evolver.
Expected outcome
The Evolver CLI is installed and the project meets the documented prerequisites for use.
Guide limitations
- The supplied documentation covers installation and prerequisites but does not document a complete agent-evolution run.
- Running Evolver in a non-Git directory will fail with a clear error message.
