Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a coding agent needs searchable context from an indexed repository, especially when loading broad directory contents for each request would be inefficient.
Who it is for
- Developers using Claude Code or another documented MCP-compatible coding client
- Teams and individuals working with large code repositories
- Builders creating repository-aware coding-agent workflows
Documented uses
- Search indexed repositories for relevant code
- Provide whole-codebase context to Claude Code
- Supply semantic code context to coding agents through MCP
- Support repository-aware code generation and navigation
Requirements & limits
The repository is public, active in the supplied metadata and MIT-licensed. The documented setup requires Node.js 20 or later, an OpenAI API key and a Zilliz Cloud vector database endpoint and API key.
- Whether the coding client supports MCP configuration
- Whether the workflow can provide the required OpenAI and Zilliz Cloud credentials
- Whether semantic retrieval from an indexed codebase fits the task
- Whether Node.js 20 or later is available
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Configure Claude Context for Claude Code
Connect the Claude Context MCP server to Claude Code with indexed codebase context.
Before you start
- Node.js 20 or later
- An OpenAI API key for the embedding model
- A Zilliz Cloud vector database endpoint and API key
Steps
Obtain the required OpenAI API key and Zilliz Cloud endpoint and API key.
Use the documented claude mcp add command with OPENAI_API_KEY, MILVUS_ADDRESS and MILVUS_TOKEN environment variables.
Start Claude Code with the configured MCP server.
Expected outcome
Claude Code is configured to use the Claude Context MCP server for semantic code search.
Guide limitations
- The documented setup requires OpenAI and Zilliz Cloud credentials.
- The supplied setup instructions document configuration, not a complete task-level usage demonstration.
Compare options for AI coding assistance
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Context | Search indexed repositories for relevant code | CLI, Self-hosted, Server | The repository is public, active in the supplied metadata and MIT-licensed. The documented setup requires Node.js 20 or later, an OpenAI API key and a Zilliz Cloud vector database endpoint and API key. |
| Overture | Inspect a coding agent’s planned steps and branches before code is written. | Self-hosted, Server, Web | Open-source software under the MIT license. The documented setup runs the MCP server locally and opens its web interface at `http://localhost:3031` by default. |
| Wigolo | Search the web and fetch pages for an agent’s research task. | CLI, Self-hosted, Server | The quickstart lists macOS, Linux and Windows, and requires Node.js 20 or later with about 1.5 GB of free disk space. The repository labels the project public beta. |
