Memvid

Memvid is an Apache-2.0-licensed Rust library that stores persistent AI-agent memory, metadata and retrieval structures in a portable single file. It supports adding and searching content, with optional features for full-text and vector retrieval and other ingestion tasks.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Memvid when an application needs persistent, portable memory and retrieval, especially when keeping the store in one file is preferable to managing a separate database. Its documented Rust quick start covers creating, populating, committing and searching a memory file.

Who it is for

  • Developers adding persistent memory to AI agents
  • Teams building portable or offline-first knowledge applications
  • Rust developers configuring a single-file retrieval component

Documented uses

  • Keep agent context across sessions in a persistent memory file.
  • Add documents and metadata to a searchable knowledge store.
  • Retrieve relevant stored content without operating a separate database.
  • Choose optional search and ingestion capabilities through feature flags.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The library is available as a public GitHub repository under the Apache-2.0 license. Rust setup requires version 1.85.0 or later; the repository also lists CLI, Node.js and Python packages.

  • The single-file storage model avoids requiring a separate database for the described memory layer.
  • The core implementation is Rust-based, with separately listed CLI, Node.js and Python packages.
  • Capabilities are feature-selectable, including BM25 search, vector search, PDF extraction, CLIP image search and Whisper transcription.
  • The append-only Smart Frames model supports querying past memory states and inspecting changes over time.

Source-based practical guide

Create, populate and search a Rust memory file

Store a document with metadata in a Memvid file and retrieve matching content.

Before you start

  • Rust 1.85.0 or later
  • Add memvid-core version 2.0 to the Rust project's dependencies

Steps

  1. Create a memory file, for example with the name knowledge.mv2.

  2. Build document options with a title, URI and tag, then add the document bytes.

  3. Commit the memory file.

  4. Search with a SearchRequest and read the returned hits.

Expected outcome

A committed single-file memory store containing the document and metadata, with search results available through the Rust API.

Guide limitations

  • The example demonstrates adding document bytes; it does not describe a complete agent integration.
  • Additional search capabilities may require enabling feature flags.
Source-based practical guide

Select Rust search and ingestion features

Configure the documented Rust crate with selected search or ingestion capabilities.

Before you start

  • Rust 1.85.0 or later
  • memvid-core version 2.0 in a Rust project

Steps

  1. Choose the required documented features, such as lex for BM25 full-text search or vec for vector similarity search.

  2. Add the chosen feature names to the memvid-core dependency declaration.

  3. Build the project with Cargo.

Expected outcome

A Rust build configured with the selected crate features.

Guide limitations

  • The feature list identifies capabilities but does not specify application-specific integration steps.
  • Some capabilities, such as cloud API embeddings, require an external service by their description.
