Source-based practical guide

Prepare AnythingLLM for local development

Set up the repository’s environment and start its server, frontend, and document collector locally.

Before you start

  • A checkout of the AnythingLLM repository.
  • Run the listed setup and development commands from the repository root.
  • Fill in the generated environment files, including server/.env.development, before starting services.

Steps

  1. From the repository root, run yarn setup to create the required .env files.

  2. Fill in the generated environment files, ensuring server/.env.development is complete.

  3. Run yarn dev:server to start the server locally.

  4. Run yarn dev:frontend to start the frontend, then yarn dev:collector to run the document collector.

Expected outcome

The development environment is prepared and the server, frontend, and document collector can be started using the documented commands.

Guide limitations

  • The instructions do not specify dependency installation, environment variable values, or troubleshooting steps.
  • The README notes that the server may not work correctly if server/.env.development is not filled in.
  • Telemetry collects anonymous usage events; the README describes opting out by setting DISABLE_TELEMETRY to true in server or Docker environment settings, or disabling telemetry under the in-app sidebar’s Privacy section.
