Practical overview
When it fits
Use Trieve when an application needs an API-backed retrieval layer combining search, recommendations and RAG, especially when self-hosting or model choice matters.
Who it is for
- Developers building document search or knowledge-base applications.
- Teams implementing retrieval-augmented generation over indexed content.
- Product teams needing recommendations based on similar content or user signals.
- Organizations evaluating self-hosted search infrastructure.
Documented uses
- Index and retrieve documents using semantic, sparse or hybrid search.
- Generate RAG responses from indexed or selected context.
- Recommend similar chunks or grouped files.
- Tune and filter search results using dates, tags, numeric fields and engagement signals.
- Deploy search infrastructure in a VPC or on-premises environment.
Requirements & limits
The repository identifies Trieve as an API service and provides self-hosting documentation.
- API and OpenAPI documentation are provided for application integration.
- Self-hosting guidance covers AWS, GCP, Kubernetes and Docker Compose.
- The search stack includes dense vectors, neural sparse search and optional cross-encoder reranking.
- Teams can use referenced models or bring their own embedding, reranking and language models.
- Filtering, grouping, recency biasing and engagement-based merchandising provide application-level relevance controls.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Prepare a Trieve local development environment
Install the documented system, language and project prerequisites for local development.
Before you start
- A Debian/Ubuntu or Arch Linux system, or macOS.
- Permission to install system packages and development tools.
- A terminal with access to the documented installation commands.
Steps
Install the listed platform-specific dependencies.
Install Node.js and Yarn using NVM.
Create the server/tmp directory.
Install Rust and cargo-watch.
Expected outcome
The documented local-development prerequisites are installed and the temporary server directory exists.
Guide limitations
- This procedure documents prerequisite installation only; it does not document starting the server or running an application.
- The listed dependencies differ by operating system.
