Practical overview

When it fits

Use Foundry when an Ethereum development workflow needs contract lifecycle tooling, automated fuzzing, local node support and command-line EVM interaction in one modular toolkit.

Who it is for

  • Solidity developers building Ethereum applications
  • Teams testing and fuzzing smart contracts
  • Developers needing local EVM or fork-based testing environments
  • Engineers interacting with contracts and chain data from the command line

Documented uses

  • Build, test, fuzz, debug and deploy Solidity contracts with Forge
  • Send EVM transactions and retrieve chain data with Cast
  • Run a local Ethereum development node with Anvil
  • Experiment with Solidity in a REPL using Chisel
  • Connect a Solidity editor to Foundry's language-server mode

Requirements & limits

The project is publicly hosted and open source, with Apache-2.0-or-MIT licensing. It is presented as a CLI, desktop and self-hosted developer tool.

  • Choose Forge for the main Solidity build, test, fuzzing, debugging and deployment workflow.
  • Use Cast when the task is direct EVM interaction, transaction submission or chain-data retrieval.
  • Use Anvil when local-node or fork-based testing is required; the supplied example explicitly demonstrates mainnet forking.
  • Consider Chisel for interactive Solidity experimentation through a REPL.
  • Foundry's language-server mode can be configured for editor integration through forge lsp --stdio.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Configure Foundry as a Solidity language server

Start Foundry's documented Solidity editor integration for VS Code or another editor.

Before you start

  • Foundry installed.
  • A Solidity project.
  • VS Code installed for the documented VS Code workflow, or an editor that accepts a Solidity language-server command.

Steps

  1. From the Solidity project's terminal, run forge lsp to open the project in a VS Code Extension Development Host.

  2. For another editor, configure the Solidity language-server command as forge lsp --stdio.

  3. Use forge lsp --vscode when explicitly opening VS Code is required.

Expected outcome

Foundry provides the documented Solidity language-server backend for the selected editor workflow.

Guide limitations

  • The source explicitly documents the VS Code mode and the --stdio command for other editors, but does not provide editor-specific configuration steps beyond the command.
  • Solar-specific linting and project-setting behavior is documented, but no broader editor compatibility is established.
