Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Zeppelin when you want a browser-based notebook for interactive analysis or collaborative analytics documents, particularly when your workflow spans multiple languages or interpreters.

Who it is for

  • Data analysts exploring data interactively
  • Teams creating and sharing analytics documents
  • Technical users who need notebook workflows across multiple languages or interpreters

Documented uses

  • Explore data through SQL or other supported interpreters.
  • Create collaborative documents for analytics work.
  • Visualize analysis results within a notebook workflow.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The installation documentation describes running Zeppelin locally and opening its web interface at localhost:8080.

  • Select the all-interpreter or net-install binary according to the interpreters you need.
  • Check the supported-interpreter information for the required tool or engine before downloading.
  • Plan for interpreter-specific dependencies; the installation guide names Spark and Flink as examples.
  • Remote browser access requires changing the default server address from 127.0.0.1.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install Zeppelin from a binary package and open its web interface

Start a local Zeppelin instance using a downloaded binary package.

Before you start

  • Java JDK 11 with JAVA_HOME set
  • Mac OS X or Ubuntu 18.04 or 20.04
  • A Zeppelin binary package

Steps

  1. Unpack the binary package in a directory of your choice.

  2. If using the net-install package and you need additional interpreters, run ./bin/install-interpreter.sh --all.

  3. Start Zeppelin with bin/zeppelin-daemon.sh start.

  4. Open http://localhost:8080 in a web browser.

Expected outcome

A running Zeppelin web interface accessible locally at localhost:8080.

Guide limitations

  • The net-install package includes only a subset of interpreters; other interpreters require installation.
  • Some interpreters require additional dependencies, such as Spark or Flink distributions.
  • The default binding to 127.0.0.1 prevents access from another machine unless zeppelin.server.addr is changed to 0.0.0.0 in conf/zeppelin-site.xml.
