Practical overview

When it fits

Use Zabi when building a Zig project that needs Ethereum or EVM connectivity and its compiler can use Zig 0.16.0. It is also relevant when the project needs the library’s documented ABI, wallet, transaction, EVM-interpreter or Solidity tools.

Who it is for

  • Zig developers building applications that connect to Ethereum or other EVM-compatible chains.
  • Teams adding EVM connectivity, contract bytecode execution, ABI processing or transaction handling to Zig-based tools.

Documented uses

  • Connect a Zig application to a node through HTTP(S), WS(S) or IPC JSON-RPC.
  • Use wallet and contract instances to interact with nodes and JSON-RPC.
  • Encode and decode ABI data, including log topics, and work with EIP-712.
  • Parse and serialize transaction data, including support for EIP-4844 KZG commitments.
  • Run contract bytecode in the library’s EVM interpreter.

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and identifies its license as MIT. The documented build requirement is Zig 0.16.0.

  • The build script rejects Zig versions other than 0.16.0.
  • JSON-RPC connection options documented include HTTP(S), WS(S) and IPC.
  • Block-explorer support covers only free methods from those API endpoints.
  • The README lists support for test chains including Anvil and Hardhat.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Add Zabi modules to a Zig project

Fetch Zabi and make its full library or a selected module available to a Zig target.

Before you start

  • Zig 0.16.0
  • A Zig project with build.zig and build.zig.zon

Steps

  1. Add Zabi as a dependency in build.zig.zon, or use zig fetch --save with the repository tag or commit.

  2. Use the zig_version_0.16.0 branch or a tag matching Zig 0.16.0.

  3. In build.zig, obtain the zabi dependency module and add it to the target with addImport; for a single module, obtain that module and add it instead.

  4. Import the library or selected module in Zig source code.

Expected outcome

The chosen Zabi module is available for import by the configured Zig target.

Guide limitations

  • The build script rejects Zig versions other than 0.16.0.
  • When adding the archive dependency manually, the compiler reports a hash mismatch; the README instructs adding the reported hash to build.zig.zon.
