Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a Swift application needs Ethereum node access or transaction and contract operations without implementing the communication protocols itself.
Who it is for
- Swift developers building Ethereum-enabled applications for Apple platforms or Linux.
- Teams adding node communication, transaction signing or smart-contract access to an existing Swift project.
Documented uses
- Connect a Swift application to an Ethereum node over HTTP RPC.
- Sign and send Ethereum transactions.
- Read contract data and call contract functions.
- Query node information such as client version, network ID and peer count.
Requirements & limits
The project is a public GitHub repository with an MIT license. It is installed through Swift Package Manager; CocoaPods and Carthage are not supported from version 0.5.0.
- Requires Swift Package Manager v5 and Swift 5 or later.
- The core product covers transaction signing and HTTP RPC; PromiseKit extensions and JSON ABI parsing are optional products.
- The README identifies geth and erigon as node examples.
- The README says SPM is tested on iOS, macOS and officially supported Linux distributions, identifying Ubuntu 16.04 and 20.04; its broader little-endian compatibility statement is not a claim of testing on every such syst
- The README limits supported web3 methods to methods supported by Infura.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Add Web3.Swift to a Swift Package Manager project
Install the core Web3 product and import it into a Swift source file.
Before you start
- A project using Swift Package Manager v5 and Swift 5 or later.
- A Package.swift manifest.
Steps
Add the Web3.swift repository as a package dependency in Package.swift, using the documented from: 0.6.0 version requirement.
Add the Web3 product from the Web3.swift package to the target's dependencies.
Import Web3 in the Swift source files that need the library.
Expected outcome
The project manifest includes the core Web3 package product and its Swift files can import Web3.
Guide limitations
- PromiseKit extensions and JSON ABI parsing are separate optional products.
- CocoaPods and Carthage are not supported from version 0.5.0.
