Agent Memory & RAG

Wax

Wax is a Swift-based local memory layer for AI agents. It stores searchable information in a single .wax file and provides retrieval across text, images and video. Its MCP server connects supported agent hosts to shared memory across sessions.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Wax when agent sessions need persistent, shared memory on a local device, or when several documented agent hosts should read and write the same store.

Who it is for

  • Developers connecting supported AI agent hosts to one local memory store.
  • People building on-device agent workflows that need persistent retrieval across sessions.
  • Users who want searchable memory stored locally rather than in a hosted vector database.

Documented uses

  • Save information from agent work for use in later sessions.
  • Share the same searchable memories among supported agent hosts.
  • Retrieve relevant information from text, images and video collections.
  • Connect Apple Foundation Models to on-device memory tools.

Requirements & limits

The repository says Wax requires no account and describes the project as open source under the Apache-2.0 license.

  • The store is a single .wax file containing documents, FTS5 text search, CoreML vectors and a write-ahead log.
  • The documented Apple Silicon install stages the MCP server, MiniLM runtime and operator skill.
  • MCP setup differs by host; multiple clients are documented to share one HTTP server, while Claude-only use can use stdio.
  • Host instructions must specify when to save memories; installing the server alone is not sufficient.
  • The README describes local file sharing to another Mac or iPhone through iCloud or AirDrop.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Stage Wax’s MCP server on Apple Silicon

Prepare the Wax MCP server and its runtime and operator skill for a later host connection.

Before you start

  • Apple Silicon device
  • Node.js package runner via npx

Steps

  1. Run the command below to stage the MCP server, MiniLM runtime and operator skill.

    Documented command
    npx -y waxmcp@latest install
  2. Follow the repository’s host-specific wire-up instructions for the agent you intend to connect.

  3. Add the documented always-on usage instructions so the host knows when to write memories.

Expected outcome

The Wax components are staged and the selected host has instructions for connecting and using memory; this guide does not cover a verification or retrieval test.

Guide limitations

  • The install flow described here is for Apple Silicon.
  • A staged server alone does not instruct the host when to save memories.
  • For two or more clients, the README says they must share one HTTP server; it documents stdio for Claude-only use.
