Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Vulnhuntr when reviewing Python code for potential multi-step vulnerabilities, especially when you can identify files that handle remote user input and want to focus analysis on them.

Who it is for

  • Security engineers assessing Python repositories for remotely exploitable flaws.
  • Developers investigating code that processes remote user input.
  • Security researchers who want LLM-assisted call-chain analysis and findings to investigate.

Documented uses

  • Analyze a local Python repository or focus on a specific file or subdirectory.
  • Trace related code across files to examine a potential path from remote input to server processing.
  • Review an analysis that includes reasoning, a proof-of-concept exploit, and a confidence score.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The project is public and licensed under AGPL-3.0. Running analysis requires Python 3.10, a local project path, and an API key for the selected LLM provider.

  • The tool supports Python codebases only and lists seven vulnerability classes.
  • Analysis can target a whole repository or a specific file or subdirectory.
  • Claude and GPT are listed as clients; Ollama is marked experimental.
  • LLM context use can lead to substantial provider costs, so usage monitoring or spending limits are advised.
  • The final analysis includes a confidence score, but findings are potential issues to investigate.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Analyze a Python repository with Vulnhuntr

Run a repository or targeted-file analysis using a documented LLM client.

Before you start

  • Python 3.10.
  • Vulnhuntr installed with pipx.
  • A local Python project directory.
  • An Anthropic or OpenAI API key for the selected client.

Steps

  1. Install Vulnhuntr with pipx, specifying Python 3.10.

  2. Export the API key for the chosen provider.

  3. Run Vulnhuntr with the project directory as the root; optionally provide a file or subdirectory to analyze and select the LLM client.

Expected outcome

Vulnhuntr analyzes the selected project code and produces a final analysis with reasoning, a proof-of-concept exploit, and a confidence score.

Guide limitations

  • Python 3.10 is required; other versions may not work reliably.
  • Only Python codebases and the listed vulnerability classes are supported.
  • LLM usage can incur substantial provider costs; monitor usage or set spending limits.
  • Ollama is marked experimental, with the project reporting problems with open models' output structure.
