Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you need a configurable, self-hosted VQGAN+CLIP inference setup rather than a hosted image-generation interface.
Who it is for
- Developers who want to run VQGAN+CLIP image generation locally or in Docker.
- People building a self-hosted image-generation workflow around VQGAN+CLIP inference.
Documented uses
- Generate images from text prompts using a local or Docker runtime.
- Configure image dimensions, initialization, iteration limits and where generated files are saved.
- Choose between documented CPU and GPU inference paths.
Requirements & limits
- GPU use requires CUDA; the setup notes give VRAM requirements for 256×256 and 512×512 images, while the 1024×1024 figure is explicitly untested.
- The documented Docker setup needs Docker and Docker Compose 1.28.0 or later; GPU use through Docker also needs nvidia-docker.
- CPU inference is documented as an alternative to GPU inference.
- The repository is MIT-licensed.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the Docker image
Build the project's Docker image before using its documented Docker inference workflow.
Before you start
- Docker and Docker Compose version 1.28.0 or later.
- nvidia-docker if using a GPU through Docker.
Steps
Clone the repository and change into its directory.
Run the command below to build the Docker image.
make build
Expected outcome
The Docker image is built; the repository documents Docker inference separately through `make generate` or `make generate-cpu`.
Guide limitations
- This setup guide does not cover configuring prompts or running inference.
- GPU use through Docker requires nvidia-docker.
