Practical overview
When it fits
Use Vosk to explore a speech-data indexing and verification workflow when you can supply audio mappings and phoneme/timing data from conventional ASR, and can accommodate a large index.
Who it is for
- Speech-recognition researchers exploring retrieval-based or lifelong-learning approaches.
- Teams with speech data and Kaldi-prepared alignments or decoding output that want to index samples and review questionable recognition segments.
Documented uses
- Create or extend an index of audio segments.
- Search indexed segments during speech decoding to help identify possible phonemes.
- Flag suspicious decoding segments for review and consider adding reviewed samples to the index.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and licensed under Apache-2.0.
- The workflow relies on prepared phoneme-and-timing data; the README names Kaldi alignment or decoding output as an option.
- Index storage is a significant consideration because the README says it is not expected to fit in a single server’s memory.
- The project describes generalization capabilities as questionable.
- The README presents Vosk as a server project and directs Android and Linux Kaldi API users to the separate Vosk API repository.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Prepare speech data, build an index, and verify decoding
Use Vosk’s documented Python workflow to index prepared audio and identify suspicious segments in decoding results.
Before you start
- Python 3 and the repository’s requirements.txt dependencies.
- A wav.scp-style list mapping utterances to audio files.
- A CTM phones file containing phonemes and timings, produced from Kaldi alignment or decoding output.
- The Vosk repository scripts, including index.py and verify.py.
Steps
Install the project requirements with pip3 install -r requirements.txt.
Prepare the audio mapping and phoneme-and-timing files; Kaldi ASR can produce the CTM data from alignment or decoding.
Run python3 index.py wavs-train.txt phones-train.txt data.idx to create or add to the index.
Run python3 verify.py wavs-test.txt phones-test.txt data.idx to search for indexed segments and report suspicious ones for review.
Expected outcome
A Vosk index is created or extended, and the verification script reports suspicious decoding segments that can be checked and potentially added to the database.
Guide limitations
- The index is described as too large to be expected to fit in a single server’s memory.
- The documented segmentation workflow requires conventional ASR.
