Practical overview
When it fits
Use Vool when a task benefits from an agent acting on a configured workspace through tools, or when continuity between sessions matters. Web research and cloud-model use require a connection; local inference can work offline after setup.
Who it is for
- Developers who want an agent to inspect repositories, change files and run tests.
- People who want web or document research with context carried between sessions.
- Users seeking a local-model agent with inspectable tool activity and permission controls.
Documented uses
- Investigate a repository and make a code change, then run affected tests.
- Research a question using web sources and save findings.
- Read PDFs and summarize differences with references.
- Keep project decisions available to the agent in later sessions.
Requirements & limits
The README says local-model use can start without a VOOL account or cloud API key. Cloud use requires the user’s provider credentials and may incur provider charges. The project describes macOS as its primary desktop development target, Linux as supported, and Windows as experimental.
- Initial installation sets up a local model and requires time and disk space for its download.
- Local inference works offline after setup; web tools and cloud models need an internet connection.
- Model choice affects task quality, and available tools depend on setup and permissions.
- Windows is an experimental path; jobs needing a Linux-kernel sandbox are directed to WSL2/Linux.
- The README identifies the project as version 0.7.0-beta and says the repository has no installer release; it separately references a macOS DMG on the project website.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install VOOL from source on macOS or Linux
Use the bootstrap script to prepare the Python environment, local model, and local services.
Before you start
- macOS 14 or newer, or Linux with glibc 2.31; Ubuntu 22.04 or newer is listed.
- At least 8 GB memory and 2 GB disk for the app; allow additional disk space for local models.
- An internet connection for setup and the initial model download.
Steps
Download the bootstrap script: the command below.
curl -fsSLo bootstrap_vool.sh https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Parad0x-Labs/vool/main/installer/bootstrap_vool.shRun the command below.
bash bootstrap_vool.sh --ref mainAllow the installer to prepare the Python environment, check hardware, set up the local model, and launch local services.
Expected outcome
The installer sets up VOOL and launches its local services. Local model inference can work offline after setup; web tools and cloud models require a connection.
Guide limitations
- The initial model download requires time and disk space; local models require considerably more memory than the app itself.
- Intel Macs require macOS 14 or newer; local models run on CPU only and may be slow.
- The installation procedure does not document a task execution or verification step.
