Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when building an Android app that needs a dialog-based speech-input experience and a documented permission flow, with resulting text handed back to the app.

Who it is for

  • Android developers adding voice input to search or conversational interfaces.
  • App teams seeking a customizable permission and listening-dialog flow for speech input.

Documented uses

  • Present microphone permission and voice-input dialogs in an Android app.
  • Receive recognized speech as text through a results listener.
  • Customize suggested phrases, listening behavior, displayed text and overlay layouts.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

  • The repository identifies Kotlin as the primary language and Android as the platform.
  • The README documents Gradle integration using com.algolia.instantsearch:voice:1.0.0-beta02 from JCenter.
  • Custom layouts must retain the documented containers and view identifiers.
  • The app receives possible text results through VoiceSpeechRecognizer.ResultsListener.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Add a voice-input dialog and receive text

Integrate the documented overlay flow and pass recognized speech into an Android app.

Before you start

  • An Android application with an Activity and supportFragmentManager.
  • The documented Gradle dependency: com.algolia.instantsearch:voice:1.0.0-beta02.

Steps

  1. Add the documented dependency to the app's build.gradle.

  2. In the Activity, check RECORD_AUDIO permission and show VoicePermissionDialogFragment when it is not granted; otherwise show VoiceInputDialogFragment.

  3. Implement VoiceSpeechRecognizer.ResultsListener.onResults to handle the returned possibleTexts, such as placing the first result in a view.

Expected outcome

The app can present the permission or voice-input dialog as appropriate and receive spoken input as text through the results listener.

Guide limitations

  • The documented dependency is a beta version sourced from JCenter; confirm that it fits the app's current build setup.
  • When permission is denied, explain the rationale or guide the user to enable microphone access manually.
