Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a task requires the AI to operate on websites while you watch, steer, approve important actions, or take over manually.
Who it is for
- People researching across multiple web pages
- Users who need help navigating sites or filling forms
- Developers building browser workflows with MCP or external agents
- Users who want to connect a selected AI provider through BYOK
Documented uses
- Research pages and compare information across sources
- Navigate websites and summarize content
- Fill forms with review of important actions
- Continue longer browsing tasks using sessions, checkpoints, notes, and run history
- Expose browser interaction to compatible MCP clients
Requirements & limits
The project is open source under the MIT license. It documents Linux, Windows, and macOS desktop support; Linux is described as the most mature install target, while macOS release packaging is available from source. Research Desk plan approval, sub-agent execution, and report export require Vessel Premium.
- Whether you need visible browser activity rather than hidden automation
- Whether durable sessions, checkpoints, and run supervision matter for longer tasks
- Whether your preferred AI provider is among the documented integrations or offers an OpenAI-compatible endpoint
- Whether MCP control or an external agent integration is part of your workflow
- Whether Linux maturity or source-based macOS packaging fits your setup
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
