Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want to manage compatible LLM provider configurations for Copilot Chat within VS Code, or migrate settings from another provider tool.
Who it is for
- VS Code users who want to configure compatible provider models in GitHub Copilot Chat.
- Developers moving provider configurations from another chat-provider app or extension.
- Users seeking extension-based code completion or commit-message generation alongside chat.
Documented uses
- Add a listed provider through a guided configuration and authentication flow.
- Manually enter provider API details when using the custom configuration flow.
- Synchronize model lists and migrate or import provider configurations.
- Configure code completion and generate commit messages through VS Code.
Requirements & limits
Requires VS Code 1.115.0 or later. Install from the VS Code Extension Marketplace or install a VSIX downloaded from GitHub Releases. Provider authentication is generally an API key or browser login.
- Some features depend on experimental VS Code APIs; enabling them may require administrator privileges.
- Without those APIs, code completion and preset templates are unavailable, and commit-message generation is less effective.
- When this extension’s code completion activates, it disables VS Code’s built-in completion by default.
- VS Code background utility models may consume a free Copilot account’s quota unless changed in settings or through the extension’s quick settings.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Add a provider from the supported list
Configure a listed provider and import it for use in Copilot Chat.
Before you start
- VS Code 1.115.0 or later.
- Authentication for the provider, usually an API key or browser login.
Steps
Open the VS Code Command Palette and run “Unify Chat Provider: Add Provider From Well-Known Provider List.”
Select a provider.
Follow its authentication prompts, then review and edit the configuration on the import screen.
Select Save to import the configuration.
Expected outcome
The provider configuration is imported for use with models in Copilot Chat.
Guide limitations
- This guided flow applies to providers in the extension’s support list; other providers can be configured manually.
- Some extension features are limited without enabling experimental VS Code APIs.
Manually configure a provider
Enter the provider details needed to create a custom provider configuration.
Before you start
- VS Code 1.115.0 or later.
- The provider’s API format, API base URL and authentication details, usually an API key.
Steps
Open the VS Code Command Palette and run “Unify Chat Provider: Add Provider.”
Enter a unique provider name.
Choose the provider’s API format and supply its base URL and authentication details.
Expected outcome
The provider’s connection details are entered in the extension’s configuration flow.
