Practical overview
When it fits
Use TypeChain when a TypeScript smart-contract project needs generated typings for an ABI and a supported contract-library target.
Who it is for
- TypeScript dApp developers who work with Ethereum smart contracts.
- Teams that want typed contract methods and event interfaces generated from ABI files.
Documented uses
- Generate TypeScript bindings from contract ABIs or supported artifacts.
- Add typed contract interfaces to a TypeScript application.
- Use IDE support and static typing to help avoid calls to nonexistent contract methods.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and identifies an MIT license.
- The core package and the desired target package are installed separately.
- The README says generated code requires TypeScript 4.3 or newer.
- TypeChain is described as legacy software, with critical fixes possible but no active development expected.
- The README recommends considering Abitype, Wagmi and Viem, which parse ABIs within TypeScript's type system.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Generate bindings from ABI files with the CLI
Create TypeScript contract typings from project ABI files for a selected supported target.
Before you start
- Install the TypeChain core package as a development dependency.
- Install the target package you plan to use, such as @typechain/ethers-v6.
- Use TypeScript 4.3 or newer for generated code.
- Have ABI files or supported Truffle/Hardhat artifacts in the project.
Steps
Install TypeChain with the command below and install the desired target package.
npm install --save-dev typechainRun
typechain --target=your_targetwith an optional glob pattern for the ABI files.Optionally specify
--out-dirto choose where generated files go.Import the generated typings in the TypeScript project and add generation to the build process.
Expected outcome
Generated TypeScript typings or wrappers for the selected contract-library target.
Guide limitations
- TypeChain rewrites existing generated files; the README recommends not committing them.
- The chosen target package must be installed.
- The project describes TypeChain as legacy software, with critical fixes possible but no expected active development.
