Practical overview
When it fits
Use Tuned Lens when an analysis needs estimates of a transformer’s final predictions from intermediate residual-stream states, rather than only a direct unembedding of those states.
Who it is for
- Researchers studying how transformer predictions form across layers
- Model evaluators comparing intermediate predictions with a model’s final output
- Python users working with PyTorch and pretrained models from the Transformers library
Documented uses
- Inspect how next-token predictions change across transformer layers.
- Compare layer-level predictions with the original model’s final output distribution.
- Train affine translators for intermediate representations.
- Build a layer-by-layer transformer interpretability analysis.
Requirements & limits
The project documents pip installation and a Docker image for running training scripts. Its README lists Python 3.9+ and PyTorch 1.13.0 as basic prerequisites.
- The tuned method trains affine translators to account for changes in representations between layers.
- The package also provides a LogitLens that directly unembeds residual-stream states.
- The README warns that the public interface is pre-1.0 and may change regularly.
- The repository identifies the project as MIT-licensed.

Install Tuned Lens with pip
Prepare a Python environment and install the Tuned Lens package.
Before you start
- Python 3.9 or later
- PyTorch 1.13.0
- A virtual environment, as recommended by the project README
Steps
Install the basic prerequisites in a virtual environment.
Install the package with pip using the command below.
pip install tuned-lens
Expected outcome
The Tuned Lens Python package is installed in the environment.
Guide limitations
- The README warns that the public interface has not reached version 1.0 and may change regularly.
