Toyblocks

Toyblocks is a small Python implementation for exploring blockchain basics through code. Its README shows how to create and mine a block, assemble blocks into a chain, detect changed earlier block data, and repair the chain.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Toyblocks when a code example is more useful than a visual overview for learning how blocks, mining, and chain integrity relate.

Who it is for

  • Learners exploring blockchain fundamentals through Python.
  • Educators or tutorial authors seeking a compact example of mining and chain validation.
  • Developers looking for a small introductory coding exercise.

Documented uses

  • Create a block containing sample data and mine it.
  • Assemble multiple blocks into a chain.
  • Observe how changing earlier block data affects the chain’s integrity status.
  • Call the documented repair method and inspect the resulting status.

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and identifies its license as MIT.

  • The documented interface is Python module code, with examples importing block and blockchain.
  • The README provides snippets for block mining, chain construction, broken-chain detection, and repair.
  • The repository credits behavior observed in Anders Brownworth’s Blockchain Demo.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Explore mining and chain integrity with the README examples

Use the documented Python snippets to examine block mining and how changing block data affects a chain.

Before you start

  • Python environment able to import the block and blockchain modules.
  • The Toyblocks repository README examples.

Steps

  1. Import block, create a Block with sample data, and call mine() as shown in the README.

  2. Import blockchain, create a Blockchain, and add three Block objects.

  3. Change the first block’s data with update_data() and inspect the chain.broken status.

  4. Call chain.repair() and inspect chain.broken again.

Expected outcome

The examples show a mined block with a hash and nonce, and show the chain status changing to broken after block data is changed and to not broken after repair.

Guide limitations

  • The example is a small learning implementation, not a documented production deployment workflow.
