Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a desktop workflow needs to span AI-assisted audio creation and subsequent production, notation, DJ performance or visuals.
Who it is for
- Music producers who want to generate audio and continue editing and mixing it in one desktop studio.
- Musicians preparing audio for MIDI, notation, lyrics or play-along workflows.
- Performers combining DJ decks, prepared sets, scene launching or audio-reactive visuals.
Documented uses
- Generate audio from a text prompt, source audio or a painted region.
- Combine clips and edit arrangements with fades, automation, effects and WAV rendering.
- Master tracks, use VST3 or .gan plugins, and check LUFS metering.
- Convert audio to MIDI and notation, align lyrics to vocals, or draft lyrics with rhyme and syllable analysis.
- Prepare DJ sets with beat sync, key lock, loops, live stems and Automix; pair music with visual effects.
Requirements & limits

- Model downloads are disabled by default; the user must permit downloads in Settings → Models.
- The README specifies CPU support for the small model and an NVIDIA GPU requirement for the medium model.
- Suno is identified as cloud-based, distinct from the locally run application described in the README.
- The documented stack includes Python 3.12, PyTorch/CUDA 13.0, React 19, Vite 7, Tailwind 4 and FastAPI.
- The public repository lists an MIT license.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install and prepare a first track
Launch the desktop app and prepare its model download for track creation.
Before you start
- A Windows, Linux or macOS computer.
- For the documented medium model, an NVIDIA GPU; the small model is documented to run on CPU.
Steps
On Windows, double-click theDAW.bat; on Linux or macOS, run ./theDAW.sh.
Allow missing components to be installed when prompted.
In Settings → Models, allow model downloads; the first CREATE fetches the model it needs.
Expected outcome
The app opens in a browser and is prepared to fetch the selected model when creating a track.
Guide limitations
- The model does not download automatically.
- The medium model requires an NVIDIA GPU; the small model runs on CPU.
