Tenk

Tenk is a Python command-line application that downloads SEC 10-K and 10-Q filings, indexes them locally, and retrieves relevant passages to generate answers with citations. It also supports stock-data lookup, web search, conversation memory, Excel generation, and exporting answers to PDF, DOCX, or Excel.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Tenk when a research question requires finding and comparing relevant information across SEC 10-K or 10-Q filings rather than manually locating passages in each report.

Who it is for

  • Investors and financial researchers examining company disclosures.
  • People who need to search or compare information across long SEC filings.

Documented uses

  • Ask plain-language questions about 10-K and 10-Q reports and inspect cited source passages.
  • Compare filing disclosures across companies, such as reported gross margins.
  • Create Excel tables or financial models from filing research.
  • Export answers and research results to PDF, DOCX, or Excel.

Requirements & limits

The repository documents a Personal Use License described as free for personal and non-commercial use; commercial use is prohibited.

  • Requires Python 3.10 or later and an OpenAI API key.
  • SEC EDGAR requests require a valid user-agent identity configured with a name and email.
  • Filings are indexed in a local vector database, with the documented database and export directories created in the current working directory.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install Tenk and start a filing query

Install the command-line application and submit a question about SEC filings.

Before you start

  • Python 3.10 or later
  • An OpenAI API key set in the OPENAI_API_KEY environment variable
  • A valid name-and-email identity configured for SEC EDGAR

Steps

  1. Install the package with the command below.

    Documented command
    pip install tenk
  2. Set the OPENAI_API_KEY environment variable and update edgar.identity in src/config.yaml with a valid name and email.

  3. Run tenk for interactive mode, or provide a question as an argument, such as tenk "What are Apple's main risk factors?".

Expected outcome

Tenk starts an interactive session or submits a one-shot filing question; its documented workflow checks SEC EDGAR, downloads and indexes filings, then generates cited answers.

Guide limitations

  • The guide follows repository installation and usage instructions; it does not verify execution.
  • The repository states that commercial use is prohibited by its Personal Use License.
