Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when you want a Telegram-based control surface for Kraken trading and account checks, and are prepared to configure and host the Python script yourself.

Who it is for

  • Individual Kraken users who want to place and manage trades through Telegram.
  • Python users able to configure and run a self-hosted bot with exchange API credentials.

Documented uses

  • Place Kraken market or limit buy and sell orders.
  • Review balances, asset values, last trade prices and open orders.
  • Close open orders and review closed-trade history.
  • View charts, check Kraken API status, or use the documented wallet deposit and withdrawal functions.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The project is a self-hosted Python script, not a hosted trading service. The README documents Python 3.6 and Kraken API credentials as requirements.

  • The bot is polling-based, not webhook-based.
  • Access is restricted to the Telegram user ID configured in config.json.
  • Kraken API credentials are still required even though the user does not log in to Kraken through the bot.
  • Funding functions are documented for wallet transfers, not SEPA.
  • The README cautions that order volumes must meet Kraken minimums.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up the bot for one Telegram user

Configure the Python script with a Telegram identity and Kraken API credentials so it is ready to run.

Before you start

  • Python 3.6
  • Dependencies from requirements.txt
  • A Telegram bot token from BotFather and the user's Telegram ID
  • Kraken API key and secret

Steps

  1. Install the dependencies with the command below.

    Documented command
    pip3.6 install -r requirements.txt
  2. Edit config.json to set user_id and bot_token.

  3. Put the Kraken API key and secret in kraken.key.

  4. Run the script with the command below.

    Documented command
    python3.6 telegram_kraken_bot.py

Expected outcome

The bot starts, performs its checks and presents a welcome message with a custom keyboard for available commands.

Guide limitations

  • The bot replies only to the configured Telegram user.
  • The README recommends hosting the script on a server you own because it contains sensitive Kraken API credentials.
  • Python 2 is unsupported; the documented runtime requirement is Python 3.6.
  • Order volumes must satisfy Kraken's minimum order sizes.
