Practical overview
When it fits
Use Talkify for local Mac dictation, transcription of audio or video files, or speech translation and read-aloud tasks within its documented macOS workflow.
Who it is for
- Mac users who want to dictate text into other apps.
- People who need transcripts from audio or video files.
- Users who want on-device speech, translation, and read-aloud features in one desktop app.
Documented uses
- Dictate speech into a text field using a keyboard shortcut.
- Transcribe an audio or video file and copy, drag, or save its text.
- Speak in one language and insert translated text in a chosen language.
- Read selected text aloud, optionally translating it before playback.
- Shape dictated text with a selected prompt.
Requirements & limits
The documented requirement is macOS 26 (Tahoe) on Apple silicon. Installation options include a Homebrew cask, a downloadable DMG, and building from the public MIT-licensed Swift repository.
- Requires macOS 26 (Tahoe) and Apple silicon.
- Live dictation inserts text by pasting, briefly exposing it to clipboard managers or Universal Clipboard.
- Read-aloud may use the clipboard to access selected text on web pages.
- Prompt shaping is an optional feature that uses Apple's on-device Foundation Models framework.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Transcribe an audio or video file
Create a text transcript from a local audio or video file using Talkify.
Before you start
- Talkify running on macOS 26 (Tahoe) on Apple silicon
- An audio or video file
Steps
Drag the file to the top of the screen and drop it on the notch, or select Transcribe File… from the menu.
Follow progress in the menu bar; transcription runs in the background.
When the transcript appears, drag it to a text field or folder, click to copy it, or leave it to save beside the source file or in the configured Drop Transcription folder.
Expected outcome
A transcript that can be inserted into another app or saved as a .txt file.
Guide limitations
- Talkify requires macOS 26 (Tahoe) on Apple silicon.
- The README says dictated text is pasted through the system clipboard briefly; clipboard managers or Universal Clipboard may see it during that period.
