Practical overview
When it fits
Use T5Gemma-TTS when you want to run multilingual speech generation yourself or work with the model's training and fine-tuning code, rather than rely only on a hosted voice-generation interface.
Who it is for
- Developers building self-hosted speech-generation workflows.
- Researchers or practitioners training or fine-tuning multilingual text-to-speech models.
- Users who need command-line or Gradio-based inference, voice cloning, or multiple audio candidates.
Documented uses
- Convert English, Chinese, or Japanese text into spoken audio.
- Generate speech using a reference voice and its transcript.
- Set a target audio duration or use the model's approximate automatic estimate.
- Generate multiple variations in parallel through the Gradio interface.
- Preprocess training data and run full, standard fine-tuning, or LoRA fine-tuning workflows.
Requirements & limits
The code repository displays an MIT license. The documented installation uses Git and pip; GPU use requires a CUDA-enabled PyTorch installation.
- The repository documents command-line inference, Hugging Face-format inference, and a Gradio interface.
- Batch generation in the Gradio UI can create multiple variations from the same input.
- Quantized model options and CPU offloading can reduce VRAM use, with slower audio processing as a trade-off.
- Developer-tested environments include Linux with CUDA, Windows with CUDA in Docker, and Apple Silicon using MPS; some native Windows environments may exhibit unstable inference.
- Automatic duration estimation is approximate, while an explicit target duration is supported.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Generate speech with the Hugging Face model
Run command-line inference on text and save generated audio.
Before you start
- A Python environment with the repository requirements installed.
- The T5Gemma-TTS repository and Hugging Face model identifier Aratako/T5Gemma-TTS-2b-2b.
- For GPU use, install PyTorch with CUDA before installing the remaining requirements.
Steps
Clone the repository and enter its directory.
Install dependencies with pip install -r requirements.txt.
Run inference_commandline_hf.py with --model_dir Aratako/T5Gemma-TTS-2b-2b, a --target_text value, and an --output_dir such as ./generated_tts.
Expected outcome
The command is configured to generate speech from the supplied text and write results to the chosen output directory.
Guide limitations
- The README warns that inference may be unstable in some native Windows environments; it suggests WSL2 or Docker as workarounds.
- Automatic duration estimation is approximate; specify a target duration when more control is needed.
Generate speech using a reference voice
Configure command-line inference for zero-shot voice cloning.
Before you start
- The repository dependencies and Hugging Face model Aratako/T5Gemma-TTS-2b-2b.
- Reference speech in a WAV file and the corresponding reference text.
Steps
Clone the repository and install its requirements.
Run inference_commandline_hf.py with the model directory and target text.
Add --reference_text with the reference transcript and --reference_speech with the WAV file path.
Expected outcome
The inference command is configured to generate the target text using the supplied reference voice.
Guide limitations
- The repository documents zero-shot voice cloning but does not specify additional reference-audio preparation requirements in the cited instructions.
