Practical overview
When it fits
Use Swiftspeech when implementing voice input in an iOS SwiftUI app and you want reusable recording controls plus APIs for authorization and recognition results.
Who it is for
- iOS developers building SwiftUI apps that need voice input.
- Developers who want reusable recording controls and recognition-result handling rather than building those pieces from scratch.
Documented uses
- Add speech recognition to a SwiftUI interface.
- Start recording with a press-and-hold control or toggle it with a tap.
- Handle live or latest recognition results and subscribe directly to session output.
- Configure recognition sessions with options such as locale, task hint or custom phrases.
Requirements & limits
The project is publicly available on GitHub under the MIT license. Its README documents Swift Package Manager and CocoaPods installation.
- The documented baseline is iOS 13 or later and Swift 5.2 or later.
- The framework wraps Apple’s Speech framework and integrates with SwiftUI and Combine.
- Apps must include speech-recognition and microphone usage descriptions and request authorization.
- The framework supplies recognition components, but app developers determine how to present and use the resulting text.
- The README describes on-device recognition as a configurable option; it does not establish that every recognition mode works in every context.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Prepare an iOS app to request speech recognition permission
Set the required permission descriptions and designate when the app asks for speech-recognition authorization.
Before you start
- An iOS app using SwiftSpeech
- Xcode and the project’s Info.plist
Steps
Add the NSSpeechRecognitionUsageDescription and NSMicrophoneUsageDescription entries to Info.plist.
Choose when authorization should be requested, such as when a view appears.
Call SwiftSpeech.requestSpeechRecognitionAuthorization() at that point.
Expected outcome
The app has the documented permission descriptions and requests speech-recognition authorization at the chosen point.
Guide limitations
- This covers authorization setup only; it does not implement a recording interface or process recognition results.
