Swarm

Swarm is a Swift-native framework for building AI agents with typed tools, pluggable inference providers, composable workflows, memory, guardrails and streaming. It provides a shared agent loop for iOS, macOS and Linux applications.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Swarm when building agent functionality in Swift and you want a common runtime for typed tools, provider selection and agent composition across Apple platforms and Linux.

Who it is for

  • Swift developers building agent features into applications.
  • Teams composing multiple agents into sequential, parallel or routed workflows.
  • Developers choosing between on-device Apple Foundation Models, local model services and OpenAI-compatible providers.

Documented uses

  • Define tools from Swift types for agents to use.
  • Connect an agent to an inference provider, including an on-device Apple Foundation Models path on supported devices.
  • Compose agent work into sequential, parallel or routed workflows.
  • Add conversation state, memory, guardrails or streaming to an agent application.
  • Select optional package components such as integrations, an MCP server adapter or OpenTelemetry wrappers.

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and identifies the project as open source under the MIT license. It is distributed as a Swift Package Manager dependency.

  • Requires Swift 6.2 or later; documented minimums include iOS and macOS 26 and Ubuntu 22.04 for Linux.
  • Foundation Models and some platform integrations are Apple-only; Linux projects can use compatible providers, mocks or deterministic examples instead.
  • The default package includes macros. Explicit package traits replace defaults, so select the components the application needs.
  • The framework documents local HTTP options such as Ollama and LM Studio, OpenAI-compatible cloud providers, and custom providers.
  • Apple Foundation Models is described as an on-device inference option for supported devices.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Add Swarm to a Swift package

Declare Swarm as a Swift Package Manager dependency and choose package traits for documented optional components.

Before you start

  • Swift 6.2 or later
  • A Swift Package Manager project

Steps

  1. Add the Swarm package from https://github.com/christopherkarani/Swarm, using the documented from: "0.6.6" requirement.

  2. Use the default package for core Swarm, Foundation Models and macros, or specify traits for optional components.

  3. If specifying traits, include every needed trait because an explicit traits list replaces the defaults.

Expected outcome

The project manifest declares Swarm and the selected package components.

Guide limitations

  • This covers package declaration only, not building or running an application.
  • The default package includes macros; a macro-free build uses traits: [] and FunctionTool.
  • The Integrations, MCP and OpenTelemetry traits add distinct optional components.
