Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when building a Spring AI application and you need composable tools or skills for an agent workflow, rather than a standalone agent product.
Who it is for
- Java developers building AI agents with Spring AI.
- Application teams that want reusable tools for file operations, shell execution, web access, task management or skill-based workflows.
Documented uses
- Add file-reading, writing and editing capabilities to an application’s agent.
- Enable agents to execute shell commands, search code or match files by patterns.
- Provide web search and AI-assisted web-content fetching.
- Define reusable skills as Markdown modules with YAML front matter.
- Track structured tasks or delegate work to specialized sub-agents.
Requirements & limits
The project is public on GitHub and licensed under Apache License 2.0.
- The documented prerequisites are Java 17+, Spring Boot 3.x or 4.x, Spring AI 2.0.0 or later, and Maven 3.6+.
- Tool capabilities are components to configure within an application; the library itself is not presented as a hosted agent service.
- AutoMemoryTools requires a companion system prompt, while AutoMemoryToolsAdvisor provides advisor-based wiring for the tools and prompt.
- The README describes both local Markdown-defined sub-agents and an A2A protocol sub-agent implementation.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Add the core library to a Maven project
Declare Spring AI Agent Utils as a dependency in a Maven-based application.
Before you start
- Java 17 or later
- Spring Boot 3.x or 4.x
- Spring AI 2.0.0 or later
- Maven 3.6 or later
Steps
Add the org.springaicommunity:spring-ai-agent-utils dependency to the Maven project.
Alternatively, import the spring-ai-agent-utils-bom in dependencyManagement and declare the core dependency without a version.
Expected outcome
The Maven project declares the library dependency; the README then proceeds to agent configuration.
Guide limitations
- The dependency declaration alone does not configure an agent or select tools.
- The README quick-start’s Spring AI minimum-version field is incomplete; the requirements section specifies Spring AI 2.0.0 or later.
